How to Steep Herbal Tea for Healing, Calm, and Daily Balance.
Why Herbal Tea Is More Than Just a Drink
Herbal tea is one of the simplest—and most powerful—ways to support your body. It’s a daily opportunity to check in, offer support where it’s needed, and reestablish a sense of rhythm in a world that often pulls you out of your own.
Each Koru blend is designed with care, but how you engage with your tea—how you steep it, how you sip it, how consistently you reach for it—is where the deeper benefits begin.
Whether you're just getting started or returning to the practice, this guide will help you make the most of each cup.
Steeping Well: The Difference Is in the Details
When people think of tea, they often picture a quick brew and a comforting flavor. But herbal infusions are different. The steeping process is how plant medicine enters the water—and your body.
Koru blends are made with whole herbs: leaves, roots, flowers, bark, and seeds. Each one extracts differently, and the way you steep impacts everything from flavor to function.
Temperature: Getting It Just Right
Herbs are sensitive. Flowers and leafy nervines like chamomile or lemon balm don’t need boiling water—they can become overly bitter or lose delicate compounds if the temperature is too high. At the same time, denser botanicals like roots or seeds require more heat to break down and release their benefits.
→ Heat your water until it’s just about to boil—around 190–200°F (88–93°C). You’ll see steam, but not rapid bubbles. That’s your signal.
Time: Give It a Minute (or Fifteen)
Unlike black tea or green tea, herbal blends need more time to steep fully.
- For most blends, 10–15 minutes allows nutrients, oils, and aromatics to infuse deeply.
- For tougher ingredients like roots or seeds, 15–20 minutes is ideal.
Longer steeping not only enhances the benefits—it gives you space to slow down while your body prepares to receive what the herbs have to offer.
Covering Your Cup: Small Step, Big Impact
Many of the healing properties in herbs—like essential oils and volatile compounds—can evaporate if left uncovered. By simply placing a lid or plate over your mug while it steeps, you’re preserving the full potency of your tea.
No fancy tools needed. A small act of care makes a big difference.
How to Steep Your Koru Blend |
For a Hot Infusion (8–12 oz cup)
- Scoop 1 heaping teaspoon (or 1 tablespoon for a stronger brew) into a tea basket or reusable bag.
- Pour hot water over the herbs.
- Cover and steep for 10–15 minutes. If your blend includes roots or seeds, steep for 15–20 minutes.
- Remove herbs and sip mindfully.
✧ Tip: Always cover your cup to keep essential oils and active compounds where they belong—infused in your tea, not lost to the air.
For a Cold Infusion (Overnight or Iced)
- Add 1 tablespoon of herbs to a mason jar.
- Fill with cool or room-temperature water.
- Cover and let steep for 8–12 hours.
- Strain and enjoy chilled.
✧ Cold infusions are especially refreshing with blends like REVIVE, GROUND, or HYDRATE in warm weather or when you need gentle, sustained support.
What If It Cools Before You Finish?
You can still drink it. Once properly steeped, herbal infusions hold their potency whether warm, room temperature, or cold. Reheat gently if you prefer, or sip throughout the day as a slow-release tonic.
Creating a Habit That Sticks |
You don’t need to overhaul your routine to benefit from herbs. In fact, the most lasting results often come from small choices made consistently.
Try steeping your blend alongside something you already do:
- A quiet start to the morning
- A midday reset between tasks
- A wind-down after putting the kids to bed
Linking your tea to an existing rhythm helps it become a natural part of your day—something your body begins to expect and welcome.
Not Sure What Your Body Needs Today?
Here’s a simple way to decide:
- Feeling low on energy or scattered? Go for something mineral-rich and grounding.
- Feeling foggy, inflamed, or heavy? Reach for herbs that support movement and clarity.
- Feeling tense or emotionally full? Choose blends that calm the nervous system and restore ease.
There’s no perfect answer—only the quiet insight of your body, and the willingness to listen.
Optional Enhancements
While the herbs are enough on their own, feel free to make the experience your own:
- Add lemon, raw honey, or coconut water to shift the flavor and enhance support
- Use as a calming bath soak
- Pair your cup with breathwork, journaling, or skincare to create a grounding reset
The First Step Is Simple
You don’t have to know everything. You don’t have to do it perfectly. You just have to begin—with one cup, one choice, one moment of care.
→ Let it steep. Let it meet you.
